Open Registries

From 1990 through July 1, 2002, GDC maintained nearly 24 open genetic disease registries for all breeds of pedigreed dogs. Currently GDC is operating only the Eye Diseases and Turmor registries. OFA has adopted the GDC registries, and GDC data will be merged with OFA in August, 2002. Evaluation information for all dogs registered with GDC continues to be available in the form of KinReports through an online order form on the GDC searchable registry page.

GDC maintained more than two dozen genetic disease registries and research data bases including:

Who are the evaluators?

• Eye diseases are evaluated by any Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO). The same evaluators and forms are used as for CERF registry, except that in addition, a short GDC form must be added to identify the parents of the dog and to authorize releaseof affected evaluation if it occurs.
• Histopathology and PCR - based DNA analysis for tumors (for BMD only, at this time) is accepted from the Moore/AffolterLab according to the protocol of the Berner-Garde Foundation Grant as described on the GDC Registry application form.

Glossary of GDC terms:

• Affected: there is evidence of disease in the sample registered with GDC.
• Carrier: a dog can transmit the disease gene to its offspring, without showing symptoms itself.
• Certification: no evidence of the disease at the time of evaluation.
• DNA: a method of identification for an affected, a carrier or a normal animal in some diseases.
• Evaluation: examination for disease by an expert.
• Genetic: inherited from genes transmitted from the mother and father.
• Genotype: ability to reproduce a particular phenotype whether the individual shows it or not.
• Histopathology: study of body tissue to diagnose disease.
• Normal: GDC prefers to use the word "unaffected", except in the case of a DNA identified disease where the carriers are also identified.
• Phenotype: actual traits of a particular dog.
• Registered: every evaluation (affected or unaffected) is registered with GDC and is included in the KinReport®.
• Unaffected: no evidence of the disease (may be a carrier).
